“Things must be chaotic for you?” It’s a comment that’s been made quite frequently over the last few days as my departure date looms close. It’s not so much chaos as stress – the realisation that the comfort and familiarity of life here in England is very soon about to change. I was never this well prepared when I left Japan four years ago to cycle back to England. My bags were packed with what I thought I needed and I simply set out on the road. This time round I’ve had months to plan and research. In many ways I couldn’t be more ready.
I loaded the bike up last Sunday evening to take the strain – 52kg all in. I’ve forgotton what it’s like to ride a fully laden bicycle. The local newspaper ran a story yesterday and I finally managed to speak with my cycling friends Friedel and Andrew, who run a series of podcasts on their website. In less than a week’s time I’ll be pedalling through the French countryside. Why I should be worrying when I’ve got a diet of pate, red wine, cheese and baguettes over the coming weeks to look forward to I don’t know.

Hey Peter,
We are arriving in Marrakech on 2 November. I am not too sure how long we will stay in Morocco before making our way towards Mauritania as I have not been to this country in many years and want to show Jedrzej around :-)
We will be in touch in any case:-)
Marlène.

Hi Peter,
Looking at your photograph, I can only spot essential items on display, although 6 books does sound like (at least) one too many! It should not be a problem though as you will be able to discard half of these books/ maps by the time you enter Africa and gain more space and weight capacity for food and water.
We will keep our eyes open for you when we get to Morocco.
Until then, happy cycling!
Marlène& Jedrzej.

Good luck mate, I’ve still got 3 months until my next big trip! Just wondering, what model North Face shoes are you taking? My last pair were Hedgehogs and my new ones are Vindicators. Good stuff.

Hi Kyle, I can’t remember – some cross trainers – light, but rigid. All the best with getting back on the road.

Hi and good luck!
As someone who spent 8 years cycling on 6 continents, I wonder if you may have a bit to much weight. 52kg is a lot when you have to pack in say 20 + liters of water and a weeks worth of food (not the freeze dried kind).
Just a thought…

Yes, 52 kg is a lot – this includes the bike at 17kg and a 10 litres of water that i filled in an ortlieb holder. So 25kg of gear. I have about 6 books as well – too much. The weight will decrease when I realise I’m not using half the stuff.

Peter,
Awesome website. Added to my RSS feed… Really like the design. Will follow your journey in Africa, as the continent has always been buried in the back of my mind. There is something about Africa that attracts me wildly but scares the s**t out of me at the same time…
Anyways, have fun, stay safe and tailwinds all the way to Cape Town from a fellow cycling vagabond;)

Hi Rich, Thanks for the comments. I think ignorance about Africa often creates fear – I hope I can dispel some of the negative stuff.
